How to Discern God's Voice: Simple Tests to Confirm It's Him

Part 2 of 3 by Don Bell | ⏱️ 8 minute read

Mastering how to discern God's voice is the critical safeguard that ensures the words we receive are truly from the Father and not from our own desires or the enemy's deceptions. Now that we have explored the habits of a listening heart, we must learn to weigh what we hear against the unchanging standard of Scripture.

This article provides the biblical framework and troubleshooting tools you need to test every impression and prompt, and walk in the peace of the Holy Spirit. By learning to distinguish the Good Shepherd's voice from the "static" of life, you can move forward in your calling with absolute certainty and spiritual clarity.

Now that you're creating space to hear God, the next crucial question emerges: How do you know it's really Him?

A Personal Anecdote

Years ago, I attended a Rex Humbard evangelistic service in Toronto with friends. An invitation was given for anyone needing healing to stand and receive prayer. I stood and declared my vision healed, placing my eyeglasses firmly in my pocket. They remained in my pocket throughout the remainder of the service while I sat desperately waiting for my vision to improve.

(Spoiler alert: God hadn't said my eyes were healed, and physically, they weren't. My strong desire for the gift of healing had led me to accept presumption instead of faith.)

An hour later in the parking lot, I was thoroughly humbled when I got into my car and needed my glasses to drive everyone home.

Learning From Our Mistakes

Here's what that embarrassment taught me: Getting it wrong doesn't disqualify you from hearing God; it qualifies you to hear Him better. Every mistake teaches you something about how to discern God's voice from your own thoughts, the opinions of others, or the enemy's deception.

How to Discern God's Voice From Other Voices You Might Hear

Learning how to recognize God's voice means becoming better at testing what we hear. Here are the filters I’ve learned to apply.

God Leads; the Enemy Pushes

God's voice leads you with peace and patience (Psalm 23:2). The enemy (Satan and his demonic forces) and the flesh (our fallen human nature apart from God's Spirit) push you with fear, panic, urgency, and a sense of "I must do this right now or else." When you feel pressured to act immediately without time to pray or seek counsel, that's a red flag.

God Reassures; the Enemy Frightens

Even when God corrects you, He offers hope and a way forward. If the voice brings condemnation, hopelessness, or vague anxiety, it is not from the Father. God's conviction (correction that leads to repentance and restoration) is specific and redemptive; the enemy's condemnation (vague shame that leads to despair) is general and crushing.

God Aligns with Scripture; the Flesh Twists It

The Holy Spirit will never contradict the written Word of God. This is foundational: if a revelation contradicts the Bible, it isn't God speaking. However, remember that God's Word might not always look the way you expect. He often breathes new life into familiar passages you've read a dozen times, challenging the denominational lenses that may have colored your understanding of a verse's true meaning.

God Exalts Jesus; the Flesh Exalts Self

Does this word you hear lead you to trust Christ more, or does it feed your ego, pride, or desire for status? God's voice always points to Jesus and away from self-glorification.

God Brings Clarity; the Enemy Brings Confusion

"God is not the author of confusion but of peace" (1 Corinthians 14:33). If you feel mentally scattered or tormented by a thought, step back, as it likely isn't Him. This doesn't mean God's Word is always immediately clear, but it shouldn't produce ongoing mental chaos.

God Is Confirmed by Wise Counsel; the Enemy Seeks Isolation

God's voice will often be confirmed by mature believers. Be very wary of voices that tell you to keep secrets from your spiritual leaders or family. The enemy loves isolation; God loves community. Seeking godly counsel from trusted believers is a powerful step in learning how to discern God's voice when you feel uncertain about a specific direction.

If someone claims to have "a word from God" for you that contradicts Scripture, brings fear, or isolates you from community, that's a major red flag — despite their spiritual reputation. A true word from God will offer encouragement.

Recognizing the Fruit

Signs It's Really God

  • It aligns with Scripture (but not always the verse you expect).
  • It produces peace, even when calling you to difficult things.
  • It convicts with love and offers hope.
  • It often surprises you with its kindness.
  • It bears good fruit over time (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control).
  • It builds faith instead of feeding doubt.

Signs It's Not God

  • It demands immediate action with no peace.
  • It inflates your ego or crushes your spirit.
  • It contradicts God's character of love.
  • It creates division without opportunity for redemption.
  • It sounds suspiciously like merely your fears or desires.
  • It demands you act alone without seeking counsel.

Quick Spiritual Check: Is It Really God?

Use this checklist when doubt creeps in:

  • God leads with peace; the enemy pushes with panic.
  • God reassures with hope; the enemy frightens with condemnation.
  • God aligns with Scripture; the flesh twists Scripture.
  • God exalts Jesus; the flesh promotes self.
  • God brings clarity; the enemy leaves confusion.
  • God confirms through counsel; the enemy seeks isolation.

The Difference Between God's Voice and Your Thoughts

One of the most common questions believers ask is: How do I know the difference between God's voice and my own thoughts? Here's the key: Your thoughts typically focus on your perspective, your plans, and your limitations.

Troubleshooting: "I've Tried to Hear God, But It's Not Working"

If you've prayed, waited, and listened, but the heavens still feel like brass (your prayers still seem to hit a ceiling and go no further), please don't lose heart. You aren't broken, and God hasn't abandoned you. Often, a simple "connection issue" needs to be cleared up.

Common Obstacles to Hearing God Clearly

Since obstacles aren't always obvious, take a moment to honestly reflect on these four questions.

Why Can't I Hear God's Voice? Questions to Ask Yourself

  • Is there unconfessed sin? Sometimes holding onto a grudge, a habit, or pride creates static on the line (Psalm 66:18). A simple, honest prayer of repentance can clear the air instantly.
  • Are you trying too hard? Striving creates spiritual noise. Remember, you are a sheep, and sheep don't strain to hear the shepherd; they just know His voice. Relax.
  • Are you angry or disappointed with God? If you've been hurt by unanswered prayer in the past, you might be subconsciously blocking His voice to protect yourself. It's okay to tell Him, "Lord, I'm hurt. Help me trust You again."
  • Is your environment too loud? You cannot hear a "still, small voice" if your life is constantly surrounded by media, music, text messages, and busyness. Give God the first five minutes of your morning in total silence.

The Secret I Discovered

Sometimes when God seems silent, that silence itself is His clearest voice. His "No" or "Wait" speaks volumes, but we miss it because we're listening for directions instead of wisdom. Silence isn't absence; it's often an invitation to trust what He's already spoken.

If You Still Don't Hear God

Are you waiting for a burning bush like God's dramatic appearance to Moses, when God may simply be lighting a candle? Many believers miss God because they're looking for the spectacular — a booming voice or a vision. Look smaller. Look for the sudden good idea that comes to mind, the passing memory of a Scripture, or the peace that settles on you when you pray.

Also, don't expect too much too soon. Be patient in allowing your relationship with God to grow. Learning to hear God is a lifelong journey, not a weekend workshop skill. As you patiently allow your faith to mature, you will find that understanding how to discern God's voice becomes clearer with every passing season.

Remember, the journey of how to hear God clearly unfolds gradually, with each season of your life bringing new dimensions of understanding. What you hear at six months into your faith walk will differ from what you discern at six years.

Address Unresolved Hurt or Fear

Fear of what God "might" say can make us deaf to what He "is" saying. If you're afraid that He'll rebuke you or send you on a mission trip to the other side of the world, you will struggle to listen. Remind yourself of His character: He is a Good Father — the perfect parent who loves you unconditionally. His voice is the safest thing in your life!

Sometimes the barrier to learning how to hear God clearly isn't about technique or timing — it's about healing. When we address the fears and hurts that make us afraid of what God might say, we often discover He's been speaking tenderly all along, waiting for us to feel safe enough to listen.

Reduce Noise and Busyness

We sometimes treat God like a radio station that we try to tune into while driving 100 mph. You need to slow down to concentrate. Try a digital fast for one evening: no phone, no internet, no TV, no distractions. Replace that time with sitting in a comfortable chair and saying, "Speak to me, Lord. I'm here listening."

Ask Others to Pray With You

After all, we are members of the Body of Christ (the worldwide community of believers) for a reason. Sometimes our own anxiety is too loud for us to hear. Ask a trusted, Spirit-filled friend or mentor to pray with you, not just for you —believers who actively welcome and respond to the Holy Spirit's presence and guidance. Ask them, "What do you sense God is saying about this?" Borrowing their faith can help jump-start your own hearing.

Finding Meaning When God's Voice Seems Silent

Knowing how to discern God's voice involves understanding those seasons when God seems silent. I used to think I'd done something wrong to displease Him. However, I've learned that His silence often means:

  • He's already spoken and is waiting for your obedience.
  • He's teaching you to trust what you've already heard Him say.
  • He's patiently developing your faith.
  • He's preparing you for a deeper level of spiritual hearing.

Sometimes the most profound communication happens in the quiet times: "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10). There's a difference between God's purposeful silence (which teaches trust) and perceived silence (when we're not yet tuned to His frequency).

A Beautiful Picture of Waiting

I believe King Solomon thought of those quiet times when he wrote, "O my dove, in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the cliff, let me see your face, let me hear your voice; for your voice is sweet, and your face is lovely" (Song of Songs 2:14).

The Hebrew word מַדְרֵגָה (maḏrêg̱â) is translated as "cliff," meaning by implication "a step" or "stairs." The original King James Bible renders this phrase as "in the secret places of the stairs." This creates a beautiful metaphor: hidden resting places along a difficult climb; quiet moments to hear God's voice before stepping forward in obedience to His words and continuing the ascent.

Walking in the Certainty of His Truth

We have explored the vital importance of testing what we hear and troubleshooting the barriers that can hinder our spiritual reception. Now that you know how to discern God's voice with confidence, you are ready to see how He uses various channels to lead you.

And that's what excites me most about your journey: You are about to discover that God has likely been speaking to you all along in ways you haven't yet recognized. In the final part of our series, we will look at twelve of the creative and supernatural ways God speaks to His children today.

From the gentle whisper of inner knowing to the very rare but powerful audible voice, from dreams and visions to the word gifts exercised by fellow believers. You'll discover which channels God most often uses with you, and you'll gain practical tools to sharpen your spiritual hearing in each area.
